Whistler has a lot going on for a small town. The resort is the most popular Canadian Ski Resort, and has gained notice with the international crowd over the past 10 years! Expect stores and restaurants to be BUSY if you come at high season which is Christmas and New Years. It is normal for Whistler to have snow by then, and the village sparkles with thousands of Christmas lights and decorations. The party continues all through the winter, the European styled village and the charming Creekside plaza areas are filled with people and skiers just off the hills.
The town is designed for vacationers, and you can walk everywhere. There are tons of amenities at both sides of town, and a cab can take you from one end to another in less than 10 minutes. In the summer, colorful baskets decorate the charming village and patios are filled with people enjoying the hot summer weather. Whistler can easily reach temperatures as high at 40 degrees Celsius as it is inland, so don’t forget your swimsuit. There are four championship golf courses within 10 minutes of each other, five lakes, and the biggest downhill bike park in the world, all great reasons to visit Whistler in the summer. The favourite local saying is “I came for the winter, but stayed for the summer!”
Spas, 5-star restaurants and world-class shops are all common ways for visitors to spend a day, but the real reason people keep coming back again and again is for some of the largest ski areas in the world. From Creekside you can take the chair up to the top of Whistler Mountain, take the Peak to Peak chair across the valley sky, and ski down Blackcomb for lunch. You could ski here for years and not find it all! Be careful when you come to Whistler, you might just fall in love and never leave…that’s how most of us ended up here!
In February of 2010, Whistler hosts the Olympics and they come to Vancouver. Several events are taking place here, but don’t expect to see anything without a ticket! And while the resort expects to be PACKED, there won’t be much road traffic as there will be nowhere to park…so if you are coming to the resort, the skiing will be amazing because everyone will be at the games, but you’ll have to walk, cab or bus to the hills.
